The Military Packaging Process

Understanding Military Packaging

Military packaging is a very thorough process. Handled properly, it is a process that can be completed fairly quickly. The numerous steps involved in military packaging are very extensive and happen long before items can be packaged and shipped.

The manufacturer will begin by searching the military bidder services. Once a supplier is found, the manufacturer will request a bid. This bid will have many packaging and shipping requirements to which the supplier must comply.

There are various requirements depending on the materials to be shipped. The shipping supplier will review the materials to determine whether or not the item is hazardous, consumable or fragile and will then verify weight and dimensions, trip life, required containers and various other important characteristics. The supplier will then provide a quote to the manufacturer.

If the manufacturer is awarded the bid and feels this quote is acceptable, the supplier will be given a copy of the contract, along with the material needing packed and shipped.

Once the materials and contract are sent over, each is reviewed carefully before packaging can begin. The materials will be subjected to a list of military packaging requirements in order to be handled properly.

There is a large variety of options available for materials for packaging. Some of the possibilities include:

  • Reusable containers allow for a shipping and storage container to be used repeatedly
  • Short and long life containers
  • Multiapplication containers are designed to protect an assortment of parts depending on the fragility and size of the material

Each item needing shipped is required to be received in the same condition as before shipping Once the materials are packaged properly and the order has been processed, the packages are ready for inspection.

After passing inspection, the parts are shipped to their destination. Although the project may seem completed, the most difficult task is still ahead. This task is the required military paperwork. Many companies would like to do business with the military, but they do not know how to go about processing an order through the approved process. The paperwork required with military packaging is very extensive. If there is even one mistake made, it could hold up payment for months.
